Police tie suspect to 12 bank heists

Campbell

Police in Valparaiso have arrested a man suspected of robbing a dozen banks, including one in Warsaw this week.

When authorities questioned 35-year-old Joseph Edward Campbell of Elkhart, they said he admitted to the Warsaw robbery and 11 others in northern Indiana and southwest Michigan. These included banks in Plymouth, Hebron, Rensselaer and Chesterton, police said.

The FBI believes Campbell could be responsible for two robberies in Valparaiso and one in Paw Paw, Mich.

Police said Campbell walked into the Lake City Bank in Warsaw on Tuesday and handed the teller a note demanding money.

Valparaiso police arrested Campbell on Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly robbed the Centier Bank there. A witness called police when he saw the red smoke from a dye packet that exploded in Campbell’s car as he fled, authorities said.

The witness followed Campbell from the bank to a gas station, where police arrested him.

Campbell was being held at the Porter County Jail pending federal bank robbery charges.
