Roethlisberger accused again

... and now you've got to wonder

My gut generally doesn't lead me astray, although it does occasionally lead me through a drive-thru. And my gut tells me Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is in a heap o' trouble.

In case you missed it, Roethlisberger is the subject of a sexual assault complaint by a 20-year-old college student, stemming from an incident in a Milledgeville, Ga., nightclub Friday night. This is the second time in less than two years that Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual misconduct; he's still fighting a rape lawsuit stemming from an incident in Nevada in 2008.

Roethlisberger has so far managed to deflect any ill effects on his reputation from that one by aggressively denying the allegations and playing the blame-the-victim card. It's not going to be so easy this time.

For one thing, we're now dealing with two different incidents involving two different women. It'll be pretty hard to play the she's-just-some-crazy-person card with two women.

No. 2, the woman in question in Friday's incident filed her complaint almost immediately. So there goes the if-this-happened, why-did-she-wait-so-long-to-file-a-complaint defense.

And No. 3 ... the initial reaction from Roethlisberger's handlers was markedly different this time. Instead of out-and-out outraged denials, all they initially said was he was cooperating with authorities.

A very telling distinction, if you ask me.
