Crash traps driver fleeing police

Firefighters had to free a South Bend man from his car early Saturday after he flipped it several times while fleeing police in LaGrange and Noble counties, authorities said.

Bruce Wayne Stahl, 43, was southbound on Indiana 9 in downtown Wolcottville shortly after midnight when he braked suddenly. Police said it was an apparent attempt to force a LaGrange County sheriff’s deputy behind him to crash.

When the deputy tried to stop Stahl in his Ford Aspire, he sped away. Police chased Stahl for four miles on Indiana 9 until he lost control of his car on the south side of Rome City. The car skidded, hit a ditch and rolled several times, according to police.

The crash trapped Stahl inside his car. After rescuers freed him, he was flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

The extent of his injuries was not clear, and he was not listed in the hospital’s directory Saturday afternoon.

Police expect Stahl to face charges of resisting law enforcement, operating a vehicle after having been given a lifetime suspension and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
