Truck rig hits pickup after U.S. 20 crash

Traffic was snarled early Tuesday on U.S. 20 in Steuben County after heavy fog contributed to one accident, then a tractor-trailer rig hit a pickup truck involved in the first crash.

Three Angola men were taken to Cameron Hospital with injuries -- driver James A. Spence, 33, passenger James E. Neely, 37, and driver Sheldon Likes, 48.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department said Spence was driving slowly about 6:10 a.m. because of the dense fog when Likes pulled up behind him in the westbound lane, saw the tail lights and tried to avoid a collision.

Both vehicles spun toward the south side of the road, where Spence’s pickup was struck by the truck rig going east. The sheriff’s department said the trucker stopped to check on the other drivers, then left the scene. It is not known whether he realized his truck hit the pickup, police said.
