Meeting on Elmhurst closing is today

Elmhurst High School

The first of three meetings to gather comments on proposed school closings and budget cuts at FWCS is set for this evening at Elmhurst High School.

The meeting 6 p.m. at 3829 Sandpoint Road.

The Fort Wayne Community Schools board last week directed administrators to proceed with a proposal to close Elmhurst and Pleasant Center Elementary School, effective this fall. The district expects to save $1.9 million by doing so.

In addition, the district will cut $6 million by increasing class sizes at elementary and middle schools and by moving the high schools from a four-block schedule to a seven-period day.

There will also be cuts in the teaching staff.

The district must cut $15 million from this year’s budget to make up for a shortfall in state support.

Public forums at Pleasant Center and the Grile Administrative Center are set for next week.
