Mad Ants fall short despite strong scoring

Despite putting seven players in double figures, the Mad Ants lost on the road to the Albuquerque Thunderbirds 108-104 Wednesday.

Sean Sonderleiter led Fort Wayne with 20 points.

Also, Ryan Ayers, Dan Dickau and Rob Kurz each had 16 points, while Oliver Lafayette had 12 and Roderick Wilmont and Anthony Kent got 10 each.

The Mad Ants only played eight players and seven of them scored double digits in points.

Fort Wayne (14-26) led 21-19 after the first quarter but was outscored 38-22 in the second by Albuquerque (18-22).

Antoine Agudio led the Thunderbirds with 29 points.

BASKETBALL

Elmhurst players Junior All-Stars

Elmhurst’s Lacia Gorman and Liza Clemons were named to the Junior All-Star team that will play exhibition games against the Indiana All-Stars on June 7 and 9 at north and south sites to be announced. Gorman will play on the Core Team, which plays at both sites, while Clemons will play only at the north site.

Dwenger tickets for regional on sale

Tickets for Bishop Dwenger’s Saturday boys basketball regional at Blackford are on sale today and Friday in the athletic office and in the cafeteria during lunch from 10:40 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The cost at all regionals is $9 per ticket for both sessions. Dwenger will play Wawasee at 10 a.m.

Fundraiser set for Lewis’ son

North Side will play host to an alumni benefit basketball game March 20, with proceeds going to the son of former North Side player Jeron Lewis, who died Jan. 14 of an enlarged heart. There will be a women’s game at 5 p.m. and a men’s game at 7 p.m. as part of the benefit at By Hey Arena. There will also be a raffle, a slam dunk contest and a performance by North Side dancers, among other events. Admission to the benefit is $3. Ohio senior wins Naismith Award

Jared Sullinger, a 6-foot-9 senior who led Columbus Northland High School to an undefeated season, has won the Naismith Award as the top prep boys player in the country. His father and coach, James “Satch” Sullinger, received the award as the nation’s top boys high school coach. Northland (21-0) is ranked No. 1 by USA Today. Bishop Luers senior Deshaun Thomas, who was one of six finalists for the Naismith Award, will join Sullinger at Ohio State next season.

Detroit said three doctors have cleared Rodney Stuckey for exercise after a heart evaluation. … Golden State said center Andris Biedrins underwent surgery to repair a small tear of an abdominal muscle.

The Atlanta Thrashers recalled 48-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios, an 11-time all-star. … General managers have developed framework for a rule that allows referees to assess a minor or major penalty for blindside hits to the head.

Homestead, Carroll in city hockey final

Homestead and Carroll will meet in the Fort Wayne City Hockey final at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Canlan. The top-seeded Spartans beat Northrop 4-1, and the No. 2 Chargers beat Snider 1-0 on a power-play goal by Kris Heffelfinger with 1:17 left in the third period.

HORSE RACING

Breeder convicted of animal cruelty

A prominent New York thoroughbred breeder and trainer has been convicted of mistreating dozens of malnourished horses. Ernie Paragallo was convicted of 33 of 34 misdemeanor animal cruelty counts in a non-jury trial. The 52-year-old Long Island resident was charged after authorities raided his farm in April and seized 177 malnourished horses.

Regional time, ticket cost wrong

Because of a reporter’s error, the time and ticket cost of Bishop Luers’ Tipton Regional game was incorrect Wednesday. Tickets cost $9 for the 10 a.m. Saturday game.
