Notre Dame's incredible run had to end sometime.
The Irish lost 53-51 to No. 7 West Virginia in the semifinals of the Big East tournament in New York.
It was the game Notre Dame wanted to play, slow and low scoring. It was just time for the Irish's six-game losing streak to end.
Notre Dame (23-11) had the chance to win it at the end. Tory Jackson missed a three-pointer with 4 seconds left. The Irish's Tyrone Nash came up with the rebound, but Wellington Smith stripped it from him just as the buzzer sounded.
Ben Hansbrough led Notre Dame with 17 points.
While Notre Dame will not be playing in its first Big East tournament championship game, the Irish did more than enough to earn a fifth NCAA tournament berth in coach Mike Brey's 10 seasons in the last three weeks.
And with their new offensive style, a lot of teams will not want to see Notre Dame during the first weekend of the tournament.
