COLUMBUS, Ohio – A newspaper reports that nonprofit groups that provide weatherization services for low-income Ohio residents are often failing state inspections.
State records reviewed by the Columbus Dispatch show that nearly 40 percent of houses inspected by the state over the past three years failed.
Twenty of the 58 agencies that perform insulation and furnace work for the Home Weatherization Assistance Program failed more than half their state inspections. Five failed all inspections.
Federal funding for the Ohio program has quadrupled to $267 million due to stimulus funds. Ohio aims to weatherize 32,000 homes by the end of March 2011.
Nick Milano of the Ohio Department of Development says violations have been caught before anyone is in danger.
