New Chamber aims for stronger Whitley

Business owners in Columbia City, Churubusco and South Whitley have joined to form the Whitley County Chamber of Commerce.

Merger discussions between city-focused Chambers began several years ago and heated up in October. The non-profit organization’s first joint meeting was this month. Michael DeFreeuw of Northeastern REMC was elected board chairman.

Expected benefits of the merger include consolidated support for all county businesses, greater networking opportunities and more volunteers to support each of the communities.

“Although the board is in place and ready to move forward with the organization, there is still a large amount of work to be done,” the Chamber said in a statement issued after its first combined meeting. “The organization encourages each and every business owner to take part in any way they can to help it succeed and grow.”
