    A home on Fort Wayne's southeast side sustained heavy fire and smoke damage in a fire Thursday afternoon.

Charge alleges food stamp scam

A Fort Wayne woman faces a formal charge of welfare fraud, accused of inaccurately reporting the size of her family, according to Allen Superior Court records filed Monday.

Candie Kelley, 33, of the 5300 block of Goshen Road, faces one charge of welfare fraud. She had not yet been arrested Monday night.

According to court records, between November 2008 and April, Kelley received more than $1,900 in food stamp benefits by intentionally falsely reporting her family size to the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration Division of Family Resources.

Kelley received food stamps for two daughters, saying they were living with her. The daughters were actually living with each of their fathers in different cities, court records state.

Kosciusko man held after car, foot chase

A Kosciusko County man was arrested Sunday after leading deputies on a pursuit, according to Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputies.

Just after noon Sunday deputies were called to a Silver Lake home on a report of a man violating a restraining order. When they arrived, the suspect, Ronald Bailey, 41, of Silver Lake, had just left, deputies said.

When deputies caught up to Bailey near County Road 700 West, Bailey fled. He continued driving away from deputies until he stopped in the 9200 block of South Packerton Road and tried to run away on foot.

Bailey was shocked with a stun gun and arrested. He is charged with felony resisting law enforcement, invasion of privacy and driving while suspended. He was being held in lieu of $2,000 bail at the Kosciusko County Jail.

Motel meth-lab bust jails city woman, 19

A Fort Wayne 19-year-old faces several felony counts after she was found dealing methamphetamine out of a motel room, according to Fort Wayne police.

Alexis Houston, 19, of the 2800 block of North Clinton Street, is charged with dealing in meth, possession of meth, maintaining a common nuisance, possession of meth-making materials and possession of paraphernalia.

She was being held at the Allen County Lockup in lieu of $60,000 bail.

Police were trying to serve a warrant for Houston just before 4 p.m. Sunday at the Country Hearth Inn, 2908 Goshen Road, where she was staying.

When officers arrived they smelled chemicals coming from inside the room, where they also found an active meth lab.

3 safely flee fire at Sherman duplex

Three people safely escaped a house fire north of downtown late Sunday, according to Fort Wayne firefighters.

The blaze was reported just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday at 2642 1/2 Sherman Blvd. When firefighters arrived at the two-story home, they found fire in a second-floor apartment’s kitchen.

No injuries were reported.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, which was confined to the kitchen.
