Car kills highway worker, driver flees

LAKE STATION – Police say a speeding car struck and killed a construction worker on a northwestern Indiana highway.

State police say a crew was patching potholes in a construction zone on westbound Interstate 80-94 in Lake Station behind two trucks when the worker was hit about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and thrown through the car's windshield.

Another worker stood in front of the car to prevent the driver from fleeing, but he got out of the car and ran away. State troopers and Lake Station officers didn't immediately catch the driver, but found items possibly identifying him inside the car.

The construction worker who was killed is Christopher D. Jenkins, 45 of Valparaiso.
