Suspect arrested in death of highway worker

LAKE STATION – State police say they’ve arrested a man believed to have been the driver who ran away after his car struck and killed a worker in a northwestern Indiana highway construction zone.

Police arrested 35-year-old Robert Shannon of Hammond on Tuesday night in Lake Station, where they believe he’d been hiding since the crash about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday on nearby Interstate 80-94.

Police said they tracked Shannon down after a friend reported that Shannon had called him asking for help and investigators traced the call to a pay phone.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries and was being held Wednesday in the Lake County Jail.

Police said the car sped through a construction zone and around traffic barriers before it fatally struck 45-year-old Christopher Jenkins of Valparaiso.
