Irish Insights

Irish lead at half

NEW ORLEANS - Notre Dame holds a 28-22 lead over Old Dominion in the team's first-round NCAA tournament game in New Orleans Arena.Irish senior guard Ben Hansbrough leads the offense with 10 points, and Carleton Scott and Tim Abromaitis each have seven.

The Irish took control of the game with a 10-0 run about five minutes into the game to grab a 15-6 lead.

But Notre Dame has let Old Dominion hang around by giving up offensive rebounds.

The Monarchs pulled within 15-13 with 8:46 to play, grabbing three offensive rebounds while scoring seven straight points. The Monarchs have six offensive rebounds.

The Irish do not appear to be in any danger, even with Luke Harangody held scoreless and picking up two fouls in the first half, but they need to keep the Monarchs off the offensive glass in the second half to ensure victory.

As for the crowd, it is what you would expect for an afternoon first-round game.

The arena is probably about a third full, and there really isn't any clear fan advantage for either team.

The few fans in the building made some noise at the start, but they have been quiet most of the way.
