A reserve officer for the Whitley County Sheriff's Department was severely injured Saturday morning when he lost control of his squad car and hit several trees.
Reserve Deputy Adam D. Schrader, 30, was responding to an emergency drug overdose call just after 3 a.m. when he crashed in the area of County Roads 275 North and 350 West, the Indiana State Police said.
Other responding officers didn't learn of the crash until they found Schrader more than 15 minutes later. Trooper Joel Lemmon also responded to the overdose call but when Schrader didn't arrive, Lemmon backtracked the route Schrader was expected to have taken.
Lemmon discovered Schrader at 3:20 a.m., the state police said.
Schrader, an eight-year member of the sheriff's department, was traveling east when he failed to negotiate the turn onto County Road 350 West, which forms a T intersection with County Road 275 North, police said.
His marked Crown Victoria traveled down an embankment and struck several trees. Although he was wearing his seat belt and the airbags released, he was severely injured, police said.
He was flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
