Knitting an Edging

I'm putting an edging on my circle sweater right now. It's a strange task. I always feel a bit off when I'm doing finishing work like this. It takes longer and is more complex than simply casting off, but it also always goes much faster than I think it will.

The edging is knit at a 90 degree angle to the circle - every other row has a knit 2 together to connect the edging to the sweater. I neglected to count my stitches and do my math to see if I will have the "correct" number of stitches to make it all work out evenly. Chances are, I don't. I suppose at some point I will get anxious enough to check - and then work out if I need to sneak in a few extra decreases or increases anywhere.

I am about 1/7 of the way finished with the circle now. There's something magical about watching the sweater come free from the needles and unfurl like a flag. I often lay it out and smooth it with my hands. I can't help but pick on the mistakes I made along the way. There are a few yarn overs that are really not in the right places. But, I always say, if someone looks that closely, they deserve to see something wrong.

After the edging, all I have to do is snip two stitches and unravel to make the armholes, pick up the stitches for the sleeves, knit the sleeves, and knit the edging on the sleeves. I will definitely make sure I have the correct number of stitches for the edging before I begin on the sleeves. There won't be nearly as much room for error there.
