Irish get wet

Notre Dame gave outside football practice the good old college try Wednesday.

The experiment lasted less than an hour.

The Irish were forced indoors when lightning and heavy rain moved into South Bound at about 4:55 p.m.

Notre Dame opened practice working on kickoff returns with Theo Riddick and E.J. Banks pairing up as the first two returners.

Tai-ler Jones and Jamoris Slaughter were the second return pairing, and Cierre Wood and Robert Blanton were the third returners.

Near the close of the open part of practice, the quarterbacks, running backs and tight ends were working on an inside pitch play. The quarterback can either pitch it inside to the tight end, who then takes it up the middle, or the quarterback can keep it himself to run toward the edge or pitch to the running back on the outside.

Be back with more from practice later.
