And Another Thing

One year wonders

Somebody should have told John Calipari this is what happens when you shop at Rent-A-Powerhouse. If you don't return on time, they really sock you with the late fees.

As anticipated, five of his Kentucky Wildcats -- including waiting-room freshmen John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe and Daniel Orton -- have declared for the NBA draft, essentially returning Kentucky to the ranks of the has-beens until Calipari brings in a fresh infusion of one-and-dones.

This is not so much building a program as leasing one, which fits the sensibilities of a carpetbagger like Calipari. He's all about expedience, not permanence. And sometimes that works, but most times it doesn't.

All you have to do is look at the two teams who played for the national title Monday night to understand how lacking in substance Calipari's approach is. In Duke and Butler, you had two programs with a philosophy and players who bought into that philosophy. It's no accident they prevailed over Calipari's Instant Gratification Express.

Now Duke and Butler are both ranked in the top three for next season already, and Kentucky is ... well, who knows.

To quote Sean Connery in "The Untouchables": Thus endeth the lesson.
