Boilermakers getting high praise for 2010-11

With the close of one college basketball season comes predictions for the next.

And Purdue is getting some nice praise already.

ESPN's Andy Katz has Purdue as his early No. 1 team for next season. Colleague Dick Vitale has the Boilermakers at No. 5.

Chicago Tribune writer Shannon Ryan has Purdue at No. 3, foxsports.com's Jeff Goodman picked the Boilermakers No. 4 and Sports Illustrated's Luke Winn has them at No. 5.

The Boilermakers had their first individual workouts of the spring Wednesday. I spotted Chris Kramer, D.J. Byrd, Ryne Smith, JaJuan Johnson, Sandi Marcius and Patrick Bade in Mackey Arena during the afternoon working with assistant coaches.

The end-of-the-season banquet is next week, and I'll try to snag Kramer and Johnson for updates. Johnson has yet to make a decision on whether he'll declare for the NBA draft. Kramer is checking into playing professionally, too. He won't play football.
