Irish kick off spring game with Dwenger commitment

Notre Dame will kick off its Blue-Gold Game in a little more than a half hour.

But even before the Irish play their first game in Notre Dame Stadium under new head coach Brian Kelly, the program added its third player from the Saints in the last four recruiting classes.

Dwenger offensive and defensive lineman Tony Springmann, a junior, orally committed to Notre Dame around 11 a.m. Springmann, who received an offer from the Irish last Friday, was in South Bend to watch the Blue-Gold Game with his family.

In a text message to The Journal Gazette, Springmann said, "Shook Coach Kelly's hand and am part of the Irish."

Springmann, who will be able to sign with the Irish on Feb. 2, 2011, will join former Saints standouts John Goodman, a receiver, and Tyler Eifert, a tight end, at Notre Dame.

As for the game today, Notre Dame mixed and matched its personnel to create a competitive game that Kelly said will be offense-friendly.

The captains for the game will be running back Armando Allen for the Blue team and cornerback Darrin Walls for the Gold team.

When the 2010 season rolls around, starting with a home game against Purdue Sept. 4, the Irish will name captains on a game-by-game basis. Notre Dame had been naming captains at the start of the season.
