Komets leading 2-1

PORT HURON, Mich. -- I'm guessing there are about 200 Fort Wayne fans at McMorran Arena and, so far, they are getting their money's worth.

The Komets are up 2-1 late in the first period on goals from Matt Syroczynski and Justin Hodgman. Syroczynski's was pretty cool. He took a pass from Colin Chaulk and batted it out of mid-air and past goaltender Larry Sterling.

Good intensity so far.

Nick Boucher has been really good in net for the Komets. He's stopped close-range shots from Brandon Naurato and Brandon Kaleniecki.

He was foiled, however, by Kris Vernarsky, who came in on his forehand, switched to his backhand and chipped the puck over Boucher's outstretched glove.

Justin A. Cohn, pro sports coordinator for The Journal Gazette, has been covering the Fort Wayne Komets since 1997. His reporting includes game stories from home and away, features about the players and personalities associated with the Komets, plus coverage of issues affecting hockey at all levels. A native of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Cohn graduated from Emory University in Atlanta. He can be reached at 260-461-8429 or by email at jcohn@jg.net.
