Daniels got big money from health insurers

Gov. Mitch Daniels has been an outspoken critic of the federal health care law, a measure the nation’s biggest health insurance companies fought hard to defeat.

Daniels, according to the National Institute on Money in State Politics, trails only California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger among candidates who have received campaign contributions from the four largest health insurance companies.

The institute analyzed contributions made by UnitedHealth Group, Humana, Aetna and Indiana-based WellPoint and found that the top 10 recipients for campaign cash between 2005 and 2008 included five state political parties, three ballot measure campaigns and the two governors.

Schwarzenegger received $146,500 from the health insurance giants; Daniels collected $99,278.
