Based on his title, you might think Michael Beerens works for the FBI or Homeland Security.
On the job, Beerens is known as a Deputy of Counter Intelligence. Oh yes, hes an investigator and a problem solver. And truth be told hes a geek. Proud of it, too.
Beerens is a supervisor with Best Buy – part of the retailers Geek Squad.
Got a computer thats not running right? Beerens and his colleagues will troubleshoot it for you.
Its a very challenging job, because technology changes so quickly nowadays, said Beerens, who works at the Best Buy at 1770 Apple Glen Blvd.
Beerens began working for the retailer in 2002 and was a sales supervisor before joining the Geek Squad. As a Deputy of Counter Intelligence, Beerens supervises computer repair.
Well, his solutions dont always involve an actual repair. The simplest problem Beerens has seen customers have? Not having a cord plugged in or knowing where a key switch is so the computer can power on. To the customer, Beerens said, it seems like its the end of the world.
But such mishaps are a piece of cake to Beerens, compared with some of the other problems he encounters – such as finding the sneaky viruses that can render a computer sluggish if not useless.
Every day theres new viruses and variants coming out, Beerens said. Its like a cat-and-mouse game.
Thats why he likes his job and his colleagues, the geeks. If one person cant solve a problem, help is always easily accessible.
Its never boring. Theres always something going on, Beerens said. The nice thing about working with Best Buy and the Geek Squad is we always have some kind of training going on.
