Harry Connick Jr. stopped by "American Idol" to serve as mentor for Tuesday's Frank Sinatra-themed episode. None of the contestants really seemed comfortable singing such timeless songs, and some seemed to let their nerves get the best of them. Here's what we thought of the final 5 contestants' performances:
1. Lee DeWyze, "That's Life" - 4/5 this week, 3.16/5 season:
- I would have rated Lee a little higher had he improved on his stage presence. His vocals were strong, but I think he's in his own lonely world on that stage. — Anthony
- He sang as himself. Did his rocker thing. Did it rock? No. Was it the best of the night? Probably, but that's not saying much. — Angie
2. Crystal Bowersox, "Summer Wind" - 3.5/5 this week, 3.1/5 season:
- I liked how she kept her personality in her delivery despite the song being clearly out of her comfort zone. — Anthony
- Not impressed. Not in the slightest. Not one bit. — Angie
3. Casey James, "Blue Skies" - 3/5 this week, 3.51/5 season:
- I agreed with Kara that his big notes were a little lamb-like, but I thought he did well overall. — Anthony
- Had hope for him in the beginning. But he is a rocker, not a crooner, so he didn't have the voice for Sinatra. — Angie
4. Michael Lynche, "The Way You Look Tonight" - 2/5 this week, 2.06/5 season:
- Can you please lick your lips a little more while you sing? I think you missed a spot. Gross. — Anthony
- So predictable. Please, surprise me. Go home. — Angie
5. Aaron Kelly, "Fly Me to the Moon" - 0.5/5 this week, 1.7/5 season:
- Frank Sinatra songs are for grownups. Come back when your mom stops dressing you. — Anthony
- Ol' Blue Eyes he is not. That was absolutely horrible. — Angie
Random thoughts
- I thought Harry Connick Jr. was a pretty good mentor for the week. He oozes cool. He could probably sell me a pair of snow boots on a white-sand beach. — Anthony
- Oh, Lady Gaga Thursday. How exciting. That will be the most exciting this show has been all season. — Angie
