Verbatim: Woman killed by train in Noble County

Written statement issued Monday morning by the Ligonier Police Department:

Deborah L. Smith, age 52, was struck and killed by an eastbound Amtrak train in Ligonier late Sunday. Ligonier Police were dispatched to the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks at approximately 10:11 p.m. after receiving a report of an accident.

Upon arrival, Officer Matt Johnson found the victim, who had been walking along the tracks, had been struck. She was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Noble County Coroner's Office.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Ligonier Police were assisted at the scene by the Ligonier Fire Department, Coroner's Office, Noble County EMS, and Norfolk Southern Police. Responders remained on the scene until about 1:30 a.m.
