Steel Dynamics Foundation pledges $50,000 to choir

Voices of Unity still seeking $215,000 for China trip

Steel Dynamics Foundation of Fort Wayne has pledged $50,000 toward a local choir's effort to compete at the World Choir Games in China this summer.

Voices of Unity, a Fort Wayne-based choir, is seeking $400,000 to get its members to the event in July. It said in a statement it has raised $104,000 through its Dreams of Gold fundraising campaign and has pledges for $81,000, including the foundation's pledge. But it said it needs to raise the remaining $215,000 in about a month to ensure travel arrangements can be made on time.

"The Steel Dynamics Foundation has great vision to understand what a fantastic opportunity this is, not just for the choir, but for Fort Wayne and all of northeast Indiana," said Marshall White, the choir's director, in the statement. "This is a chance to let the world know about the quality of our young people, and our ability to compete globally."

White said he is "hoping the corporate community rallies to support kids who are making responsible choices and have a dream of representing their country on the world stage."

A corporate rally is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 26 at Sweetwater Sound, 5501 U.S. 30 W. Donations are also being accepted through www.dreamsofgold.org.
