A new quick-service chain restaurant, McAlisters Deli, will open at Jefferson Pointe in the former Krispy Kreme location. The menu includes sandwiches, baked potatoes, salads, soups and desserts.
Five Star Asian Cuisine Restaurant is headed for the State & Beacon Plaza; it will open in the former Ethiopian Restaurant spot.
Cool meals for summer
Learn how to stay cool in the heat of the kitchen when the Parkview Womens Health Center has its next cooking class May 20.
Cool and Healthy Cooking for the Summer Heat runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Dietitians will demonstrate how to prepare light, healthy dishes.
The class is $10 for womens health center members and $20 for non-members. Advance registration is required by May 19; call 672-6500.
The center is in the Medical Office Building (Entrance 2) on the Parkview North Hospital campus, at Dupont Road and Interstate 69.
Farmers markets open for season
The Historic West Main Street Farmers Market, 1936 W. Main St., opens Friday with a variety of vendors. It is in a parking lot near the Leesburg Road intersection. Hours are 3 to 8 p.m. Fridays through Oct. 22.
The Southside Farmers Market, 3300 Warsaw St., has opened. Hours are 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through Nov. 20.
The Columbia City Farmers Market, downtown at the Courthouse square, is open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays through Oct. 30.
Wine, butterflies and fairies
Raise a glass to the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory during its spring wine tasting May 27.
The event runs 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Food will be provided by the Oyster Bar.
Tickets are $34, which includes admission to the gardens. The current exhibit is Butterflies & Fairies.

Joseph Decuis offers Italian fare
Escape to southern Italy at noon May 22 when Joseph Decuis has its next wine luncheon.
The menu features an antipasto course, pasta with calamari and asparagus, breaded Wagyu beef in a tomato broth with risotto, and cannoli with blood-orange chocolate sauce.
The lunch is $40 (or $28 without wine), plus tax and gratuity.
