Choir makes push for China trip

Fort Wayne’s Voices of Unity Youth Choir is trying to raise $400,000 to attend the World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China, this summer, and members are hoping a recent $50,000 pledge by Steel Dynamics Foundation will help encourage more donors to come forward.

The choir and its fundraiser, Dreams of Gold, have brought in $185,000 in pledges and donations, including the money from theSteel Dynamics Foundation. The total also includes more than $80,000 that choir members and their families have raised, said Linda Buskirk, the corporate fundraising coordinator for Dreams of Gold.

The choir needs to raise $215,000 more to meet its goal.

“We are hoping to use this as a challenge to the rest of the corporate community,” she said.

The choir wants to send 60 members as well as chaperones, a band and support staff to Shaoxing in eastern China for the World Choir Games July 15 to 26.

The choir will be at Sweetwater Sound, 5501 U.S. 30 W., from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 26 for a corporate rally, which Buskirk hopes will encourage even more donations from the local business community.
