Wappes no one-trick pony

A distance runner by trade, Snider senior Ethan Wappes doesn't mind taking a turn at running something shorter.

Wappes ran the third leg of the 1,600-meter relay at Thursday's North Side Sectional and a respectable and personal-best 50.3 in his turn at one lap.

The Panthers finished second to Northrop in the final race of the meet.

"Usually indoors, we mess around with that because usually I run the 800 and mile," Wappes said of running the 1,600 relay. "As distance guys, we like to dabble in the 1,600 relay just for fun. Our fourth leg's hammy (Kendal Frederick's hamstring) is a little sore so we were a little precautionary there, and we just wanted to hold him off there and see what happens at regionals.

"Our other guy who might have won it, Mitch Dutton, just doubled in the 4x8 and 800. I run the mile, so they put me in. I like the 400, and my dad ran it in high school so it is kind of in the genes."

He also won the 4-lap 1,600 race (4:30.66).
