GOSHEN – Republican state Sen. Marlin Stutzman is now in the race to take Rep. Mark Souder’s place in Congress.
Stutzman made his announcement Thursday in Goshen, two days after Souder announced he would resign in the wake of an extramarital affair. He is also scheduled to speak in Angola, Kendallville, Fort Wayne and LaGrange.
Stutzman said he confronted Souder about rumors of infidelity a couple of years ago and the congressman denied it.
Many consider Stutzman to be a front-runner for the Republican nomination for the northeastern Indiana seat. He is a favorite among tea party voters and finished second to former Sen. Dan Coats in the GOP’s U.S. Senate primary two weeks ago.
A special election to complete Souder’s term in the 3rd District hasn’t yet been set. Caucuses of Republican and Democratic committeemen will pick the nominees.
