Homestead's 3-2 win over Canterbury in the sectional finals Saturday came on Spartans' head coach Jim Shull's 65th birthday.
"Before the match, we sang to him and said 'Happy Birthday', and he said he wanted us to win," senior No. 2 singles player Suzie Reecer said. "It was a good birthday present."
The Spartans duplicated their 3-2 regular-season win over the Cavaliers, one in which Shull left early to see his infant grandchild.
Despite rumors that assistant coach Steve Bushong was going to take over and try to get his career record to 2-0, Shull stuck around to celebrate with the team.
