A hasty note about hostas

So, I've got these gorgeous gigantic hostas in my front bed. They are probably getting more sun than they should – environmental change from cutting down a big tree – and last year they were ravaged by bugs that ate holes in their leaves.

This year, so far, the hostas look great. What do I use to keep the bugs at bay and give them the best chance of surviving the sun stress? I am completely at a loss. Organic answers given preference!
