Microbrews and martinis top the menus at two local events this month.
•From 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, sample microbrews and learn about home brewing during the Botanical Brew & Q. It also will feature live music, root beer floats, a brewing competition and the chance to buy barbecue dinners. Admission to this event at Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory is $5 for adults, $3 for kids (3 to 17); free for 2 and younger. For information, call 427-6440.
•Sip cocktails under the stars and watch Nick and Nora Charles discover whodunit, as Cinema Center and Club Soda team up for a fundraiser dubbed “Flicks & ’freshments, alfresco” on June 24.
The martini tasting (with plenty of hot appetizers) starts at 7:30 p.m. on the Club Soda upper deck.
That’s followed by “The Thin Man,” a 1934 film based on the Dashiell Hammett novel, which will start after sunset, about 9:30 p.m.
Tickets are $50. They are available at Cinema Center and Club Soda or by calling 426-3456. Proceeds benefit the non-profit Cinema Center.
New eateries on city’s menu
•Five Guys Burgers and Fries has opened in the Northcrest Shopping Plaza. The menu also has hot dogs. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. For information, call 484-2003.
•Covington Coneys has opened at 5920 Covington Road, in the former Higher Grounds Espress and Java Hut. The menu also has plain hot dogs and shredded beef barbecue brisket. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. For information, call 459-3647.
•The TinCaps’ “Field of Greens” deli cart at Parkview Field is now offering sandwiches, wraps, salads and drinks for lunch. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays through Labor Day. The cart is on the main concourse near the south entrance. Meanwhile, the entire concourse – about a third of a mile – is open from 7 a.m. to dusk for walkers. Visitors also can sit in the seats, but the field is off limits to protect the playing surface.
Specials for Father’s Day
•Treat Dad to a free four-course lunch (with the purchase of another) at Joseph Decuis in Roanoke. The lunch is available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 20. The menu features wild mushroom and morel soup, choice of appetizer, entrée and dessert. Entrées are Wagyu sirloin skewers, salmon, ricotta gnocchi with chorizo and roast chicken. The Father’s Day lunch is $38 a person, which doesn’t include beverage, tax or gratuity. A children’s menu (11 and younger) is $10. Reservations are required; call 672-1715.
•Waynedale Bakery is making German chocolate cakes; a 6-inch is $12 and an 8-inch cake is $25. Or get a large chocolate-chunk cookie (8 or 10 inches) that says “Happy Father’s Day.” Prices are $10 and $12. To order, call 747-2992.

Venice Restaurant to mark 30 years
To celebrate 30 years in business, Venice Restaurant owners Judy and Pat Finley have planned a week’s worth of specials.
On Monday, enjoy Mexican dishes with beer and margarita specials. Tuesday is family night with barbecue chicken and a visit from Sweetcakes the Clown from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday offers free appetizers in the bar at 5 p.m., plus music by Joyce MacNamara. Munch on barbecued ribs Thursday, while Bill Lupkin plays at 5:30 p.m.
The Jay Taylor Duo plays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday. Sing karaoke starting at 9 p.m. Saturday. And on Sunday, Coney dogs are available during the NASCAR race.
Eddie Merlot’s offers $5.95 menu
Eddie Merlot’s in Jefferson Pointe has a new $5.95 menu of appetizers, cocktails and wines on weekdays.
It’s available from 5 p.m. to closing Mondays to Thursdays and 5 to 6:30 p.m. Fridays.
The menu features flatbreads, stuffed meatballs, barbecue pork bruschetta, tuna sliders and a cheese plate.
The $12.95 Prime Time Burger menu is also available during these times.
