MERRILLVILLE, Ind. – The governors of Indiana and Illinois have signed an agreement backing the private development of an expressway connecting Interstate 65 in Indiana with I-55 in Illinois.
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed a memorandum of understanding Wednesday in Lansing, Ill., saying the states agree to work together to construct the highway known as the Illiana Expressway.
Both states’ legislatures passed bills this year that allow a private developer to build the Illiana and run it as a toll road.
The road could relieve congestion on Interstate 80/94. A route hasn’t been chosen yet, but Quinn says six years is a realistic time frame for getting the road built.
