Several from area get drafted

Indiana pitcher Chris Squires, a Canterbury graduate, was selected in the 37th round of the baseball draft Thursday by the Florida Marlins.

The right-hander is Indiana’s career and single-season saves leader. Squires has 20 career saves, and his nine saves this season matched the school record. Squires went 5-3 with a 4.31 ERA with 67 strikeouts this year.

Purdue senior Kevin Cahill was selected by the Washington Nationals with the opening pick of the 41st round (1,226th overall). The Snider graduate had a 7-4 overall record and a 5.07 ERA in 94 innings pitched. His nine career saves rank sixth all time at Purdue and 439 career opponent batters hit .237 against him. He went 1-2 with a 3.81 ERA and three saves in 28 1/3 innings pitched this season.

Two Notre Dame players, Steven Mazur and William Harford, were selected on the final day of the draft.

The Baltimore Orioles drafted Mazur, a pitcher, in the 33rd round. The Cincinnati Reds drafted Harford in the 45th round. And center fielder Golden Tate, the football star selected by Seattle in April’s NFL draft, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 50th round.
