Tom Izzo is smarter than everyone else

By which I mean, he's doing what every college coach should do when tempted by bigger bucks and the ego push of coaching -- and I use that term advisedly -- at the top level.

In other words: He's staying in school.

Now, oddly enough, part of his decision actually does hinge on ego. He clearly wasn't happy with the fact that LeBron James apparently didn't deem him important enough to respond to. If that didn't give Izzo a small clue as to what awaited him in Cleveland if he took the Cavaliers' job and LeBron re-signed with the Cavs ... well, the man's surely smart enough to read that handwriting on the wall.

The handwriting being, "If you take the Cavs' job, you'll be not much more than LeBron's valet if he comes back. And if he doesn't, you'll be just the latest college coach to fail miserably in the NBA, because the Cavs without LeBron are basically the New Jersey Nets."

Sooo Izzo opts to remain in East Lansing, where he's a veritable god. And he'll still get paid $3 million to boot.

Could a smart man have made any other choice?
