Hey, it's Ben Smith, Justin's stunt double, keeping an eye on things while he takes a few well-earned days off.
And in regards to the ongoing collaboration/conjoining/uneasy alliance that is the CHL/IHL ... or CHL ... or C(small "i") HL, here's a couple of tidbits;
* As I write this, there's still no word if Evansville is taking the plunge and joining the Whatever This Is next year.
* Speaking of Whatever This Is, a player who shall remain anonymous has raised yet another point about the CHL/IHL grafting.
In the pre-grafting days, if a player had, say, been on one of the Komets' championship teams, he could have fielded offers in the offseason from teams in the CHL, ECHL or IHL. Now those potential offers have been narrowed -- especially if the New CHL (I really, really don't know what to call this yet) retains the old IHL rule, which said if a team made a contract offer, they'd retain his rights.
In the pre-grafting days, if the player didn't like the offer, and he's an older player who doesn't fit the younger demographics of the ECHL, he could always go play in the CHL. Now the only option left is Europe.
On the other hand ... all of this may be moot if the rule goes away. Which it probably will, given the size of the New CHL.
