Of the seven players from last year's Mad Ants team who have been invited to attend NBA Summer League camps, maybe the most surprising one is Sean Sonderleiter, who will be getting a look-see from the New Orleans Hornets.
The 6-foot-10 Sonderleiter has all but pulled himself from the scrap heap and become a viable contender to get into the NBA - all because of the D-League.
Even though he is too slender to play in the middle in the NBA, Sonderleiter would be an adequte big forward because he can put the ball on the floor a little and has a decent outside shot. Asking him to play a three position would be asking for a mismatch, because he simply isn't quick enough.
But the fact that he's even drawing interest is amazing, considering that the Ants, in somewhat of an afterthought, took Sonderleiter as a 10th-round D-League pick two years ago.
Guard Oliver Lafayette, who finished the season on the Boston Celtics bench, will play for the Celtics in the Orlando Summer League that starts Monday, July 5. All the other former Mad Ants will be playing in Las Vegas from July 9-18.
Rob Kurz will be playing with Chicago, Ryan Ayers, with the Los Angeles Clippers, Jared Reiner with Detroit, Ron Howard with New York, and Chris Hunter, who spent all last season with Golden State, has been invited back by the Warriors.
Other than Hunter, and maybe Lafayette, I'm not sure if any of these guys will stick. You root for all of them and, in some ways, hope they won't be back in the D-League. But if they are back, it'd be nice to see them back in Fort Wayne.
