I saw an oriole a couple mornings ago sipping on some sugar water. I hadn't seen an oriole since coming home. I had been been gone for three weeks. Regardless, I had continued to clean and fill the oriole feeder with fresh sugar water every three days.
I decided if I saw the orioles, I would offer some jam, too. Bob Walton, local bird expert, had mentioned to me that orioles like jam. Actually, he stated that orioles only like Welch's grape jelly. I decided to try out Kroger's version of grape jelly. I put some jam on a metal lid and stuck it to the round metal feeding post with a magnet. The lid ended up on the ground, with the magnet being lost in the grass somewhere. I then put some on a pie pan and tied the pan to the round metal feeding post with twist ties. It ended up turning sideways with the jam falling into the grass.
I am now back to the drawing board. Whatever idea I come up with next, I want to wait a bit. I am afraid I might have accidentally terrorized the orioles.
Meanwhile, the wrens are busy raising their families. I have two active nests in my yard. I have posted a video of one busy family.
