Vanilla Bean opens pastry boutique

Vanilla Bean’s popular Italian ricotta cookies finally have a permanent retail home to satisfy demanding customers who couldn’t get their fill.

Vanilla Bean’s Biscotti & Pastry Boutique has opened at 3410 N. Anthony Blvd. in the former Old Crown Coffee Roasters spot. (Old Crown moved across the street.)

Owners Debbie Smith and Sandra Wharton bake their crunchy but soft biscotti on-site.

They also make other European-style desserts, but they don’t offer muffins, bagels or doughnuts. Most prices are $1.15 to $2.50.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. It is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Here are a few more new eateries opening soon:

•The Salad Club is expected to open this week at 6443 W. Jefferson Blvd., a few doors down from Chop’s Steaks & Seafood. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays to Fridays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays. For information, call 434-2582.

•McAlister’s Deli at Jefferson Pointe – at the former Krispy Kreme site – is expected to open Monday. The quick-service chain offers salads, sandwiches, baked potatoes and soups. To see the full menu, go to

•Chappell’s Coral Grill moved from Broadway to Covington Plaza, where it’s in the former Opus 24 spot next to Covington Bar & Grill. Owner Gary Chappell plans to open the restaurant for lunch and dinner next week.

•Shooters Bar & Grill is coming to 4530 Bluffton Road, the former Tailgators location.

Reality TV stars dig into Crabfest

“Deadliest Catch” stars Captain Sig Hansen and Josh Harris will land here Sept. 13 to celebrate Crabfest 2010.

This annual fundraiser for Lutheran Life Villages will be at Memorial Coliseum Expo I. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.

Enjoy appetizers, a king crab dinner, beer tasting and cash bar.

Regular tickets are $80 (includes two drinks), and VIP tickets are $150.

VIP tickets include a reception at 4:30 p.m. with an open bar and appetizers, plus the chance to get photos with Hansen and Harris. Harris is the son of the late Phil Harris, who also starred on the Discovery Channel show and was at the event last year.

Phil Harris died in February while filming the show’s sixth season.

Hideaway offers 3-course menu

Starting Thursday, Bourbon Street Hideaway will introduce a new three-course menu for $19.95.

It includes soup or salad, choice of four entrees (such as Gulf shrimp Creole or cornbread-stuffed pork chops) and dessert. Dessert choices include butterscotch bread pudding and mojito pie.

Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Thursdays and 5 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Bourbon Street Hideaway is in the basement of Columbia Street West; the entrance is on Harrison Street.


•Anastasia’s Café, 5723 Coventry Lane, is featuring a Caesar club sandwich in July. It’s served on toasted ciabatta bread with sliced rotisserie chicken, smoked bacon, romaine lettuce, tomato, shaved Parmesan and house-made dressing. It is served with a house beverage, chips and pickle for $8.50.

•Friday is the annual Cow Appreciation Day at participating Chick-fil-A restaurants. If you show up fully dressed as a cow, you can get a free meal.

•Both the Barr Street and Roanoke farmers markets will open for the season Saturday morning.
