SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Three Indiana communities and one county say they will use $500,000 from the University of Notre Dame to shore up budgets hit hard by the recession and Indiana's property tax caps.
Notre Dame's contributions to South Bend, Mishawaka, Roseland and St. Joseph County are part of the university's commitment to distribute $5.5 million over 10 years.
The money is being provided in increments of $500,000 annually for the first five years and $600,000 annually in the second five years.
South Bend plans to put its $275,000 share into the general fund to help maintain police and fire staffing and pay for park programs. Mishawaka plans to incorporate this year's $50,000 contribution and $50,000 from last year into its budget for 2011.
Roseland received $5,000, and St. Joseph County took in $170,000, the South Bend Tribune reported.
