Denali vs. a Popsicle

On ice

Denali

I'm not sure if you know this, but it's hot. Very hot. Uncomfortably hot. Especially if you are a 65-pound Siberian husky covered in black fur.

Air conditioning and water help but only so much. A couple months ago, a reader suggested that ice cubes, which Denali could chomp on, might make for a refreshing treat. The reader said his husky would "come running at the sound of the ice rattling in the bucket."

One problem: I rarely have ice in the freezer as space is at a premium and is usually occupied by food items – frozen meals, vegetables, leftover black bean chili.

And Popsicles. Popsicles are like ice except better. Denali could eat a Popsicle ... right? Right!

I unwrapped the treat, ran Denali through a few commands and placed the stick in his mouth. He ran to the area rug in the living room and proceeded to lick the Popsicle like any person would. And when he got bored, he bit into the Popsicle ... like any person would. I'm not sure he took the time to relish each bite but I'm fairly certain he enjoyed the treat.

By the way, if you don't want to give your dog all that sugar, Green Dog (on East State Boulevard) has yoghund – an organic frozen yogurt for dogs. Denali has tried the peanut butter-papaya flavor. As well as the carton it comes in. Definite paws up for him!
