SOUTH BEND – Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey will wait to deal with the arrests of Tim Abromaitis and Eric Atkins on charges of underage drinking.
Its handled downtown. Its handled by Student Affairs and then the old coach will handle it, Brey said Tuesday during an offseason media availability.
Abromaitis, the Irishs second-leading scorer last season, and Atkins, an incoming freshman, were among 44 people arrested Friday night after police responded to a call about a fight and discovered a party, authorities said.
Other athletes arrested were quarterback Nate Montana, the son of former Irish and NFL star Joe Montana, wide receivers Robby Toma and Tai-ler Jones, linebacker Steve Filer, kicker Nick Tausch, cornerback Lo Wood, and offensive linemen Chris Watt and Tate Nichols; and incoming hockey goalie Steven Summerhays.
Well address it. Ive been here 10 years and weve had young men put themselves in position to lose. Weve had that talk. We talk about that as a team, Brey said.
So well deal with it as it runs its course. ... A lot of sweating will be involved. Thats the one thing I can say specifically and then well handle it from there.
Brey said Abromaitis, who averaged 16 points last season, and Atkins called to inform him of the situation.
