Irish-Miami rivalry sets return for 2012

Fans can mark their calendars for the return of one of college football’s most intense rivalries.

Dates have been set for a three-game series between Notre Dame and Miami, according to multiple reports.

The series will kick off with a neutral-site game in Chicago’s Soldier Field on Oct. 6, 2012, and the Irish will play host to the Hurricanes on Oct. 8, 2016, and travel to south Florida on Nov. 25, 2017.

The Miami Herald first reported the game dates Wednesday.

The opening game of the series fits into Notre Dame’s desire to play one neutral-site game a year.

The Irish will play at Yankee Stadium (against Army in November) and the Washington Redskins’ FedEx Field (against Maryland in November 2011). Notre Dame played at the Alamodome last season against Washington State and is scheduled to play Arizona State at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium in 2013.

Games between the Irish and the Hurricanes were must-see television during the 1980s, when the schools engaged in one of college football’s most heated rivalries – and those famous “Catholics vs. Convicts” T-shirts haven’t been forgotten in South Bend or south Florida.

Notre Dame leads Miami in the all-time series 15-7-1, but the teams have not played since 1990.

The teams played every season from 1971 to ’85.
