Former Carroll star tosses league’s 1st perfect game

– Former Carroll standout Zach Taylor threw the first perfect game in the Coastal Plain League’s 14-year history Thursday for the Wilmington (N.C.) Sharks in a 13-0 win over the Fayetteville (N.C.) SwampDogs.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander, a junior at Evansville, didn’t allow a baserunner in nine innings with four strikeouts.

Taylor (3-1) threw 117 pitches.

He has a 1.82 ERA in nine appearances for the wooden bat college league team.

In 34 2/3 innings, he has given up 11 runs (seven earned) and 27 hits, while striking out 22 and walking five.

The son of last season’s South Side boys basketball coach, Gregg Taylor, Zach Taylor was a three-sport standout for the Chargers.

The Coastal Plain league has 15 teams in North and South Carolina and Virginia.
