Statement issued Tuesday:
Black Pine Animal Sanctuary will host a dedication ceremony for a large animal clinic at the refuge this Sunday, August 1 at 12 noon.
Made possible by the generosity of Dr. Jay and Patrice Kumaran, long-time business owners of Allpet Veterinary Hospital and Laser Surgery Center in Fort Wayne, the new clinic will enable Black Pine to examine and treat both small and large animals living at the sanctuary.
Caring for some animals weighing from 300 to 1,800 pounds brings some unique challenges to Black Pine’s volunteer veterinary team, including the ability to take x-rays and perform surgeries on lions, tigers, bears and other rescued exotic animals.
The Kumarans have already donated much of the equipment needed to furnish the clinic, and soon construction to remodel a portion of an existing building will begin. The clinic is being dedicated in memory of J.D. Sampath Kumaran, L.V.P., Ph.d, also Jay Kumaran’s father. Both men are accomplished veterinarians with long histories of domestic and exotic animal care.
Black Pine is a 501c3 non-profit exotic animal sanctuary that provides permanent refuge to displaced exotic "pets" and retired performers. For more information, call (260) 636-7383 or visit the sanctuary’s website at www.blackpine.org.
