Coral Grill opens for lunch crowd

The city’s southwest side has another new dining option. Chappell’s Coral Grill has opened in Covington Plaza – but it is serving only dinner until Thursday.

On Friday, it also will open for lunch at 11 a.m., owner Gary Chappell says. Lunch hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays.

Initially, dinner hours will be 4:30 to 10 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays and 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For reservations, call 456-9652.

The Covington Chappell’s menu is the same as it was at the Broadway location, with seafood and steaks. The Broadway spot is now a banquet facility.

Chappell is still working on an “early bird” dinner menu for both restaurants; the other location is 5820 Coldwater Road. For reservations, call 484-3663.

Opening and closing

Meanwhile, a new eatery called Los Portales is coming to 3307 E. State Blvd., according to a building sign. The site was the location for Coney King and before that, Cerca Trova.

Unfortunately, it appears yet another restaurant has shut its doors for good.

Yokohama Japanese Restaurant, 918 Woodland Plaza Run, apparently has closed permanently, despite the sign saying it’s closed temporarily for renovations.

The phone has been disconnected, and the restaurant hasn’t renewed its annual food service permit, which expired a few months ago.

Angola bakery to add space, oven

A year after it opened, Heavenly Breads & Sweets in Angola is ready to expand.

The bakery is building a 400-square-foot addition to house a larger commercial oven and other equipment. The project is expected to be finished by Labor Day.

The bakery sells sweets to walk-in customers and also provides bread to five local restaurants and a butcher shop. Owners Scott and Rebecca Meyers hope the new oven will allow them to double their commercial customers.

Heavenly Breads & Sweets, which opened in April 2009, is at 2405 N. 200 W., next door to Caruso’s.

VFW post sets final Port-a-Pit fundraiser

VFW Post 1421 will have its last Nelson’s Port-a-Pit fundraiser of the season Saturday. A half-chicken or 1-inch pork chop is $6 and “Pit-tatoes” sell for $3.

They’ll be grilling from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Waynedale Walgreens parking lot, at Bluffton and Lower Huntington roads.

All proceeds benefit the VFW National Home for Children.

Some advance tickets ($5) are available at Post 1421, 7712 Bluffton Road.

McDonald’s collects backpack donations

To help low-income students, local McDonald’s restaurants are collecting donations of new school supplies through Aug. 8.

McDonald’s will offer a free small coffee or soft drink in return for donations.

From 6 to 7 a.m. Aug. 9, WPTA-TV Channel 21 will broadcast the end of Operation Backpack at McDonald’s, 1103 Goshen Road.

United Way agencies will help distribute the supplies to area students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

B. Antonio’s specials

B. Antonio’s Pizza has this August feature: Order any two 10-inch specialty pizzas and a dessert for $20.

The pizza of the month is chicken pesto, which has grilled chicken, tomato, pesto, feta and mozzarella on a thin crust.

•The annual African Food Festival will run from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at 3326 Clinton St., across from South Side High School natatorium. The event is free.

•Thursday is “Free Tea Day” at McAlister’s Deli in Jefferson Pointe. Customers get a free glass of sweet tea, with no purchase necessary.
