ELKHART – A large farmers market aimed at highlighting northern Indiana’s agricultural roots is closing after less than four years.
American Countryside Farmers Market of Elkhart says it will shut down on Sept. 4. Managers blamed the decision on slow business during the recession.
The market opened in May 2007 in a distinctive 51,000-square-foot barn along U.S. 20 about 10 miles east of South Bend. It has more than 490 indoor and outdoor vendor spaces.
Developers earlier this year announced plans for a 600-unit vacation getaway resort incorporating the farmers market, but they’ve been unable to arrange financing.
