Fruit becomes ammo for vandals
FORT WAYNE – First potatoes. Then pears.
The most recent ammunition of choice? Tomatoes.
A homeowner just south of downtown first noticed potatoes a few weeks ago.
The food was scattered as if an animal left it, he said.
After talking to another neighbor along Arcadia Court, the man learned an apple had been fired at a neighboring home’s window, not shattering it but caving it in.
A week ago, a pear was lying in the street next to his car. The hood of his car was dented.
Fruit and vegetables were also scattered on his rooftop. One projectile even left a hole in the home’s siding, the homeowner said.
“I don’t know if it’s kids or adults,” said the homeowner, who notified Fort Wayne police this week. “It’s just really bizarre.”
The homeowner asked that his name not be published, saying he did not want any more damage to his home or vehicle. He recently moved to the neighborhood and said he has no reason to believe someone is targeting him and instead believes the fruit and vegetable attacks are random.
The fruit has burn marks on it – leading the homeowner to believe it is being shot from a gun, according to a police report documenting the vandalism.
Police said they would notify the neighborhood liaison and increase patrols in the neighborhood.
