HOBART — Nineteen northwestern Indiana medical students will travel to Haiti to provide care to victims of the devastating earthquake that hit this year.

The 19 students leaving Sunday are part of a group called Medical Student Missions, which is comprised of second-year students in the Indiana University Medical School. Member Brandon Sparks of the med school's northwest campus in Gary said the project originated in a medical ethics class this year.

The students will help run a maternal health clinic and assess sick children for diseases during their weeklong stay.

Sparks will be part of a second group of students that will leave Aug. 8. A third group is planned for December.
