Construction always means delays, but it can also mean learning new routes with a little curiosity.
Q. While the construction on Ardmore Avenue continues, wouldn’t it make sense to change the timing of the lights at Lindenwood/Freeman/Jefferson to permit more traffic to go through? Explaining some alternative routes to motorists going through that part of the city would also be beneficial. – Nancy McCammon-Hansen, Fort Wayne
A. Well, Nancy, we hope you’ve already seen improvements since you wrote me last month.
Shan Gunawardena, city traffic engineer, said crews did make adjustments to the signal and will continue to monitor it until the project on Ardmore is completed and open to traffic. Ardmore is closed between Jefferson Boulevard and Taylor Street until the end of October.
The official detour takes drivers south on Freeman to Taylor to Ardmore, but I’d be happy to provide some alternatives.
People coming from downtown can take Broadway south to Taylor then west over to Ardmore. From the north it probably is quicker to take Interstate 69 south to Illinois Road, then go east to Getz Road, south to Covington Road, then east to Ardmore.
Q. Any chance that the short section of Cedar Canyons Road, from Forest Canyon Parkway to Old Auburn Road, will ever be paved? A demarking line would be helpful for those wide hidden turns many drivers take. – Mario Bautista
A. Unfortunately, Mario, you will have to live with the road’s current condition.
Bill Hartman, Allen County highway director, said the road is currently chip seal. He said there simply isn’t enough traffic on that section of Cedar Canyons to justify the expense of fully paving or striping the road.
Q. Most mornings as I approach Wells Street traveling west on West State Boulevard toward Goshen Avenue, the traffic coming from Goshen gets the green first. It is almost 5 in the morning and usually there is no one coming from the other direction (Goshen). Can the setup of the light be checked? – Beth, Fort Wayne
A. Well, Beth, we hope some changes have improved your commute.
Gunawardena said the signals at this intersection should be providing green lights for traffic in both directions as left-turn signals should activate only if vehicles are waiting to turn.
He said the city has made some adjustments to the signal to ensure turn arrows appear only when people are waiting, thus ensuring more through time for both directions.
